A surprising comeback triggered by an injury crisis
Philip Rivers, the retired NFL quarterback, father of 10 and recently a grandfather, is back in the league at age 44. The Indianapolis Colts signed Rivers to their practice squad on December 9, one day after he tried out on his birthday. The unexpected move follows a string of quarterback injuries that left the 8-3 Colts short on healthy options.
Starter Daniel Jones suffered a torn Achilles in a December 7 game against Jacksonville, while backup Anthony Richardson is already on injured reserve with a fractured orbital bone. Rookie emergency quarterback Riley Leonard is also managing a knee injury. With the depth chart depleted, Indianapolis turned to Rivers, who last played in 2021.
A strong tryout and a historic return
Reports indicate Rivers “threw the ball well” during his workout, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport noted that Rivers will likely serve as a backup to Leonard once both are available. The signing makes Rivers the oldest active player in the NFL, surpassing 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Rivers also becomes only the second grandfather ever to play in the league, following Brett Favre, who reached that milestone in 2010 during his final season with Minnesota. Rivers welcomed his first grandchild last year when his oldest daughter, Halle, gave birth.
A unique age gap in the quarterback room
If Rivers sees playing time this season, he would be replacing someone younger than his own eldest child. Leonard turned 23 in September, the same age as Halle, who celebrated her birthday in July. For a quarterback known for his longevity and competitiveness, the comeback underscores both his durability and the Colts’ urgent need for stability at the position.
Rivers previously played for Indianapolis during the 2020 season before retiring and transitioning to coaching high school football. His return adds an unexpected chapter to a career already defined by consistency, leadership and a deep connection to the game.
