Smarter tracking with Find My

Apple has introduced a new generation of AirTag, its popular accessory designed to help users keep track of everyday items using the Find My app. Since its debut in 2021, AirTag has helped people recover lost keys, luggage, bikes, musical instruments, and even critical medication. The updated AirTag builds on that foundation with stronger performance, improved findability, and the same focus on privacy.

The new AirTag is available starting today at the same price as the original: $29 for a single AirTag and $99 for a four-pack. Free personalized engraving remains available through apple.com and the Apple Store app.

Expanded range and louder alerts

The updated AirTag is powered by Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, the same technology used in the iPhone 17 lineup and the latest Apple Watch models. This allows Precision Finding to guide users to lost items from up to 50% farther away than before.

An upgraded Bluetooth chip also expands the detection range, while a redesigned internal speaker makes the AirTag up to 50% louder. Users can now hear alerts from as much as twice the previous distance, making it easier to locate items tucked under furniture or inside bags.

For the first time, Precision Finding is also available on Apple Watch Series 9 or later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, enabling users to locate items directly from their wrist using haptic, visual, and audio cues.

Find My network and item sharing

If an AirTag is out of range of its paired iPhone, it can still be located using the Find My network, a crowdsourced system of Apple devices that anonymously relay location data back to the owner. All location information is encrypted and never visible to other users.

The new AirTag also integrates with Share Item Location, allowing users to temporarily share an item’s location with trusted third parties such as airlines. Apple says more than 50 airlines now support this feature, helping recover delayed luggage faster. According to airline IT provider SITA, use of Share Item Location has reduced baggage delays by 26% and unrecoverable luggage by 90%.

Privacy and security protections

AirTag continues to be designed exclusively for tracking objects, not people or pets. It does not store location history on the device, and all communications with the Find My network are protected by end-to-end encryption.

To prevent unwanted tracking, AirTag includes cross-platform alerts and rotating Bluetooth identifiers. These features notify users if an unknown AirTag is detected nearby and make it difficult for the device to be misused for tracking.

Sustainability and accessories

Apple says the new AirTag aligns with its Apple 2030 goal of becoming carbon neutral across its entire footprint. The device uses 85% recycled plastic in its enclosure, 100% recycled rare earth elements in magnets, and fully recycled gold plating in Apple-designed circuit boards. Packaging is entirely fiber-based and recyclable.

The AirTag maintains the same form factor as the original and remains compatible with all existing AirTag accessories, including Apple’s FineWoven key rings and holders.
