Spotify has begun rolling out its long-awaited lossless audio feature to Premium subscribers, marking a major upgrade in sound quality for the platform. The launch brings streaming in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, giving listeners a chance to experience music in greater detail across millions of tracks.
A Highly Anticipated Upgrade
For years, Spotify users have requested lossless audio as a way to enhance music discovery and enjoyment. Now, Premium subscribers in select markets are receiving notifications as the feature becomes available. Gustav Gyllenhammar, Spotify’s VP of Subscriptions, emphasized that the rollout was designed with clarity and ease of use in mind, ensuring users understand how and when lossless is active.
Features and Compatibility
Listeners can now choose from multiple quality settings, including Low, Normal, High, Very High, and Lossless. These options can be customized across Wi-Fi, cellular, and downloads, giving flexibility for different listening habits. Lossless works on mobile, desktop, and tablet, as well as through Spotify Connect on devices from brands like Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser. Support for Sonos and Amazon devices will follow next month.
How to Enable Lossless
To activate the feature, subscribers can go to Settings & Privacy → Media Quality within the Spotify app and select Lossless for their preferred connection type. A Lossless indicator will appear in the Now Playing view or Connect Picker when the mode is active. Spotify recommends using wired headphones or Spotify Connect devices over Wi-Fi for the best results, since Bluetooth connections cannot currently transmit full lossless audio.
Global Rollout
The feature is being introduced gradually across more than 50 markets through October. Subscribers in countries such as the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Australia, and Sweden are already gaining access. Spotify expects the rollout to continue in stages, allowing more users worldwide to enjoy higher-quality sound.
Lossless audio marks a significant step forward in Spotify’s effort to enhance the Premium experience, joining other innovations like DJ, AI playlists, and Jam. By combining improved sound quality with greater control and device compatibility, Spotify aims to maintain its lead as the world’s most popular music streaming service.
