Quarterback Injury Update

The San Francisco 49ers began preparations for their Week 2 matchup against the New Orleans Saints without the expectation of starting quarterback Brock Purdy. Purdy is recovering from toe and left shoulder injuries sustained during the second quarter of last Sunday’s win over the Seattle Seahawks. Head coach Kyle Shanahan described Purdy’s status as a “long shot” for the upcoming game, citing the toe issue as the more serious concern.

Week-to-Week Recovery Timeline

General manager John Lynch confirmed on KNBR radio that Purdy’s recovery is being treated as a “week-to-week” situation. The assessment was made following consultations with team trainers, doctors, and foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson. Despite finishing Sunday’s game with 277 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, Purdy was added to the injury report on Monday.

Mac Jones Ready to Step In

With Purdy sidelined from practice on Wednesday, backup quarterback Mac Jones took over first-team reps. Signed from the Jacksonville Jaguars in March, Jones has impressed teammates during training camp. Defensive end Nick Bosa praised Jones for his consistency and recent preparation, noting that an early-season opportunity could benefit him.

Roster Considerations and Other Injuries

San Francisco is considering adding another quarterback to provide depth behind Jones. Options include practice squad member Adrian Martinez and veteran Mike White, who was recently evaluated by the team. However, Shanahan indicated that roster flexibility remains limited due to multiple injuries across the squad.

Several key players missed Wednesday’s practice, including Christian McCaffrey (calf), Trent Williams (knee), Bosa (veteran rest), Yetur Gross-Matos (knee), and Jauan Jennings (shoulder). Jennings’ availability is uncertain, though medical evaluations revealed no major damage, giving hope for his return against the Saints.

As the 49ers prepare for their Week 2 test, uncertainty surrounds the quarterback position. While Purdy’s absence looms large, the team is turning to Mac Jones to lead the offense, with roster adjustments potentially ahead depending on the injury outlook for both Purdy and other starters.
