Focus Moves Away From VR Overhaul
Apple is pausing its plans to revamp the Vision Pro headset in order to accelerate development of artificial intelligence-powered smart glasses, according to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The move reflects the company’s pivot toward competing directly with Meta, which has already established a foothold in the smart glasses market.
The Vision Pro, launched earlier this year, was widely praised for its technology but criticized for its high cost and bulk. Apple had been working on a cheaper, lighter version of the device. However, resources and staff from that initiative are now being redirected to wearable smart glasses projects.
Two Smart Glasses Models in Development
Apple is developing at least two types of smart glasses. The first, internally nicknamed N50, will pair with an iPhone and function without its own built-in display. Apple reportedly aims to unveil the N50 model as soon as next year, with a public release slated for 2027.
The second version of Apple’s smart glasses will include an integrated display, positioning it as a direct competitor to Meta’s recently announced Ray-Ban Display glasses. Apple had originally planned a 2028 launch for this more advanced model but is now working to accelerate its timeline.
Chasing Meta in the Wearables Race
Apple’s strategy highlights the growing importance of AI-powered wearables in the consumer tech sector. Meta introduced its first smart glasses in 2021 and continues to refine the product line with display-enabled versions, gaining early traction in the market.
Despite its established dominance in smartphones and wearables like the Apple Watch, Apple trails Meta in smart glasses, raising pressure to catch up before Meta further solidifies its lead. Analysts suggest that Apple’s success in the space will depend on its ability to integrate AI seamlessly into everyday use, while maintaining its reputation for sleek design and user-friendly ecosystems.
